# Minnesota property tax refund (M1PR): status, deadline and who qualifies

Minnesota pays homeowners part of their property tax back through Form M1PR. You can check your refund at the Department of Revenue's "Where's My Refund" tool. If you missed this year's filing date, you still have until **16 August 2027** to claim.

**Want the answer for your own case?** Use the tool, then read on for the details.

## Check your refund status

- Use [Where's My Refund](https://www.revenue.state.mn.us/wheres-my-refund) on revenue.state.mn.us. The state says it works for M1PR **from 1 July**.
- You need the same details as on your M1PR: **Social Security number, date of birth and the exact refund amount** you claimed.
- Status updates overnight, Monday to Friday. By phone: 651-296-4444 or 800-657-3676.
- There's no fixed payment date; processing time varies.
- **Refund bigger than you claimed?** A law change raised the 2025 homeowner refund by nearly 15%. If you filed before 15 July 2026, the state adds the increase automatically.
- If the refund isn't issued within the later of 60 days after you file or 30 September, the state owes you interest.

## Deadlines for the 2025 refund (paid in 2026)

- **Normal deadline:** 17 August 2026 (passed).
- **Final deadline:** 16 August 2027. Late claims are accepted until then.
- Use your **Statement of Property Taxes Payable in 2026** (mailed in March 2026), not the proposed-tax notice.

## Two refunds for homeowners

- **Homestead credit refund:** household income must be under **$142,490** for the 2025 refund ($147,110 on the draft 2026 form).
- **Special refund (Schedule M1PR-SR):** no income limit, up to **$1,000**, if you owned and lived in the home on 2 January of both years and your net tax rose by ** more than 12% and at least $100**.

## Renters

Renters no longer use Form M1PR. They claim the **renter's credit on Schedule M1RENT** with their Minnesota income tax return. If you rented in 2025 and owned your home on 2 January 2026, you file both.

## A refund helps, but a lower assessment helps every year

The M1PR refunds part of a high bill. If your home's assessed value is too high, appealing it cuts the bill itself. In Minnesota that starts with your county assessor and the spring Local or County Board of Appeal and Equalization.
